Playstation Home and Why isn't it Coming Out Soon Enough
![]() I am sure many of you already seen videos of Sony's Internet FREE, as in beer, interface in the last 48 hours or so. So you are finally having some PS3 envy even though you are waiting for your copy of Fusion Frenzy 2 in the mail. You might even dismissed it as some Second Life meets Gamespy knockoff. One thing for sure is that you are not expected to see any furies at Playstation Home unless you got some mad insane achievements at Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Speaking of achievements, you already know about that in Playstation Home that stores in game accomplishments as 3d rendered trophies; similar to the Playstation 2 file saves. Isn't it kind of cool to hang out with other virtual avatars while watching a streaming movie file on a screen? Maybe one of the other home users wouldn't mind listening to some obscure mash-ups while chatting away by using predefined phrases, USB keyboard, or an overpriced Bluetooth headset you got from a hot saleswoman at the mall cell phone kiosk who is trying to support her child. Probably the best part of the Home experience you noticed is that other Home users can hang out at a lobby before Home user selects which online game is everybody going to play. I am sure that there are some issues are going to be discussed like copyright issues behind streaming Home user's MP3s and MP4 videos, allowing gamesharing for PS3 BluRay games, being bombarded with advertisements, and the eventual guy wearing a fur suit with mask while saying /b/ memes. The main problem with it is the sudden announcement of something that is going to be out in this Autumn. If Microsoft can show you a minute of Master Chief tossing energy grenades for a year in advance; I think you can hide your pitchforks and cancel your plans to raid the SCE headquarters. Besides Phil Harrison mentioned at his GDC keynote speech that there is going to be an upcoming Beta test for Home this April. Yes add this page to your bookmarks and check over and over again if you can sign up. Don't worry furies, you have your Little Big Planet to mess around in. Actually, there isn't that many Playstation 3s in the userbase but imagine a few years down the road when the missus/mister/boyfriend/girlfriend/pet asks if they want to check out his/her/it's Home instead of watching CSI: Baltimore. Who knows, if Sony wants to branch out Home to other audiences within ten years, Junior might use his PSThree to asks his favorite uncle if he can watch Dad's “numa-numa” dance that he forgot to upload in 2006 over a family friendly version of Home. Now I am having memories of “The Spot”, the old interactive fiction site with paid models, script jockeys channeling the worst of Aaron Spelling, and the founding daughters of LiveJournal. Instead of downloading Japanese dramas and wanking off to some tasty Kogal who you saw at 4chan; you can be that Kogal trying to get clothes and other things from unsuspecting males who have plenty time to burn so they can see some nude colored bra action. Man, one thing for sure, once Home is downloaded on my PS3 hard drive; I shall retire from Second Life. Binary Culture readers, please do not ask for my SL username because I am not into sausage fests. Disclaimer: This blog was not intended to offend furies or future Little Big Planet players. This editor is more excited about Little Big Planet than he is at PS Home. This writer did not write about Little Big Planet because the only description Little Big Planet deserves at this moment is “made of win and awesome”. Hopefully if Little Big Planet is easier to use than the Mega Man Powered Up editor, this writer would be able to create his dream 2d platformer involving ninjas, pirates, space marines, and Treasure worthy end bosses. |
