Could this be the coming of Cthulhu?

Anybody out there who has seen Transformers, if they're anything like me, is probably going nuts over the (now infamous) nameless movie trailer.

If you haven't seen Transformers yet, I'll fill you in. (And if you haven't seen it, you need to NOW. You shame yourself, your father and your father's father by putting it off.)

The trailer starts off as a home movie of a going-away party in New York City. The party is interrupted when the lights go out, the building shakes and something that sounds like a roar in the distance. Everybody runs to the roof, where they see a huge explosion further in the city. There's mass chaos and flaming debris comes flying from the explosion and starts crashing into buildings around them.

Of course, the first thing I (and probably everybody else in the theatre) think is: What the hell is this movie? Is it Godzilla? All that we're told is that it's produced by J.J. Abrams and the release date is January 8, 2008.

What this results to is a brilliant and diabolical marketing gimmick. Nobody has any idea what the hell the movie is or what it's about, and people all over the internet immediately went crazy.

To further goad us stupid sheep along, there are a couple websites with some clues.

First of all, go watch the trailer. I'd suggest just going to YouTube for it, but of course it's been removed (evil bastards).

Ethan Haas Was Right consists of a little puzzle game that rewards you with a video of some guy talking about prophecies.

1-18-08 just has a couple pictures that don't seem to mean anything. But the two girl faces in the second picture apparently match up almost perfectly when put together.

And finally,
Wikipedia has the lowdown on all the hype.

Searching "1-18-08" on YouTube will give you a bunch of analysis videos. One guy even did a spectroanalysis of the audio from the trailer.

So what the hell does all this have to do with Great Cthulhu? Well, people are speculating that the movie may be about his coming.

According to David M. Ewalt at Forbes.com's Digital Download, "all the viral "Ethan Haas" stuff seems to be pointing in a particularly awesome direction: all these references to "the ancients" and prophecies and the destruction of the Earth casts a distinctly Lovecraftian tone. Could Abrams be filming a Cthulhu movie?"

God, I hope so.
